A fitness app costs a creator $29 to $699 a month on a no-code builder, $99 to $499 a month on a coaching or course platform, or $50,000 to $110,000 up front for a first version (MVP) from an agency. A revenue-share partner costs nothing up front and keeps 15% to 50% of revenue. An app in the stores also needs $124 in developer accounts, on every route.
- $124–110KCash before launch for a store app, by route
- 3.6% + 30¢Stripe on a web subscription
- 15%App Store and Google Play, for small developers
- ~118Members where a $499 plan beats a 30% share
Fixed fees get cheaper per member as you grow, while a share of revenue grows with you. At $14.99 a month, past about 118 paying members, even a $499 platform plan costs less cash than a 30% share.

Cost by route: $0 to $110,000 up front, plus store accounts
There are four ways to get your own fitness app. Our guide to creating your own fitness app compares them on ownership and fit. This page compares them on money.
Fitera is a revenue-share partner (route 4), and we earn from it. Every competitor price below comes from that company's own website, or from the Clutch and GoodFirms surveys for agencies, linked in the guide and in Sources and method.
What each route costs a creatorUSD, before payment fees. Checked 14 Sep 2026.
| Route | Cash before launch | Monthly cost | Cut of revenue | Time to launch | Costs people miss |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build it yourself | $124 in store accounts | $29.25 to $699, by tool and plan | None from most builders. Passion.io adds a 2% payment fee on Expand. | Weeks to months, depending on your time | Your hours: you build it and answer every member email |
| 2. Coaching platform | $124 in store accounts, plus $0 to $75 setup | $99 to $499+ for your own store listing | None, but some charge per client or subscriber ($2 per client above 20 at FitBudd, $0.99 at Uscreen) | 4 to 8 weeks | Price rises with client count. Support and sales stay with you. |
| 3. Agency build | $50,000 to $110,000 for a fitness MVP | About 25% of the build a year: $1,042 to $2,292 a month | None | 3 to 11 months | Hosting, support staff and marketing are extra |
| 4. Revenue-share partner (includes Fitera, the publisher) | $0 to the partner, plus $124 in store accounts | $0 at Fitera. Foundry charges a monthly fee. | 15% to 50% of revenue, by partner. Fitera: 30% to 50% of net revenue (after payment fees). | 4 to 6 weeks at Fitera | The share runs for the life of the partnership. Content and ads are yours to pay for. |
Monthly ranges run from FlutterFlow Basic at $29.25 (billed yearly) to Passion.io Expand at $699, and from Kahunas Ultimate at $99 to Kajabi Pro at $499.
Store accounts: Apple Developer Program $99 a year, Google Play $25 once, in your name on every route; an installable web app skips both. Agency maintenance: GoodFirms survey (around 2022), 25% of the build cost a year.
Where members' money goes: 3.6% on the web, 15% in the stores
Before any route takes its cut, payment fees come off the top. They depend on how members pay, not on who built the app.
On the web, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ per card charge, plus 0.7% for Stripe Billing on subscriptions. In the App Store and Google Play, a small developer pays 15%. What is left is net revenue.
One $14.99 monthly subscription, step by stepUS cards, Fitera's split. Checked 14 Sep 2026.
| Step | Web checkout (Stripe) | In-app (App Store, Google Play) |
|---|---|---|
| Member pays | $14.99 | $14.99 |
| Payment fee | $0.84 (3.6% + 30¢) | $2.25 (15%) |
| Net revenue | $14.15 | $12.74 |
| Fitera's share (30% to 50% of net) | $4.25 to $7.08 | $3.82 to $6.37 |
| You keep (50% to 70% of net) | $7.08 to $9.91 | $6.37 to $8.92 |
Fees: Stripe pricing (international cards +1.5%, currency conversion +1%); Apple's Small Business Program, 15% for developers under $1 million a year; Google Play's subscription fee, 10% plus a 5% billing fee in the US, UK and EEA since 30 June 2026.
On a builder, a platform or an agency app, nobody takes a share after the fee. You pay a fixed amount instead, whatever the app earns. That difference drives every number below.
What you keep at 100, 500 and 2,000 members
Here is the cash each route leaves you in the first 12 months. We assume $14.99 a month, web checkout, and the same launch day for every route. The total is what you keep each month, times 12, minus the cash you paid before launch.
Cash kept in the first 12 months, by route and audience size$14.99 a month, web checkout. Ranges follow each route's lowest and highest price.
| Route | 100 members ($1,415 net a month) | 500 members ($7,075 net a month) | 2,000 members ($28,301 net a month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build it yourself | $8,468 to $16,505 | $76,390 to $84,427 | $331,097 to $339,134 |
| Coaching platform | $10,793 to $15,668 | $78,715 to $83,590 | $333,422 to $338,297 |
| Agency build | −$120,644 to −$45,644 | −$52,722 to $22,278 | $201,985 to $276,985 |
| Revenue share (Fitera) | $8,366 to $11,762 | $42,327 to $59,308 | $169,680 to $237,602 |
On cash alone, a builder or a coaching platform leaves you the most at every size above about 55 members. An agency build overtakes a revenue share in year one at about 1,500 members. Below 55 members, a revenue share leaves you the most, because it costs nothing when the app earns little.
Cash is only part of the price. The table leaves out your time, which is the biggest cost of routes 1 and 2. It also leaves out what each route builds: see when a revenue share costs more.
Try your own numbers
Set your paying members, price and payment method. The table updates for all four routes and marks the one that leaves you the most cash over 12 months, compared at the middle of each range, whichever it is.
Members pay $7,495 a month. Payment fees take $420. Net revenue: $7,075 a month.
| Route | First 12 months | You keep a month | Monthly fee or share | Cash before launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build it yourself | $76,390 to $84,427 | $6,376 to $7,046 | $29 to $699 | $124 |
| Coaching platformMost cash kept | $78,715 to $83,590 | $6,576 to $6,976 | $99 to $499 | $124 to $199 |
| Agency build | −$52,722 to $22,278 | $4,784 to $6,034 | $1,042 to $2,292 | $50,124 to $110,124 |
| Revenue share (Fitera) | $42,327 to $59,308 | $3,538 to $4,953 | $2,123 to $3,538 | $124 |
What the calculator assumes:
- Cash only: your time, content and ads are not counted. Taxes are not modelled.
- The app is in both stores, so every route pays $124 for developer accounts.
- The mark compares the middle of each range. Ranges that overlap are close calls.
- Per-client fees are not included: $2 per client above 20 on FitBudd or $0.99 per subscriber on Uscreen adds $495 to $960 a month at 500 members.
- Every route launches on the same day.
- The same payment fee applies to every route, though some platforms add their own.
- In-app 15% is the Apple Small Business Program and Google Play subscription rate. Apple charges 30% above $1 million a year.
- Fitera partners with creators from about 20,000 engaged followers.
When a revenue share costs more than a fixed fee
A share of revenue is the cheapest route when the app earns little. It becomes the most expensive as the app grows. Here is where the lines cross, at $14.99 a month on web checkout.
- Against a coaching platform, a 30% share costs more than a $499-a-month plan once net revenue passes about $1,663 a month. That is about 118 paying members. Against a $99 plan, it happens at about 24 members.
- Against an agency build, compare three years: a $50,000 build plus 25% a year in maintenance costs $87,500. A 30% share costs more once net revenue passes about $8,100 a month, around 573 members. For a $110,000 build, the line sits near $17,800 a month, about 1,260 members.
- At a 50% share, the agency lines come sooner: about 344 and 756 members.
The fixed-fee numbers leave out the work.
On a builder, you are the developer and the support desk. On a platform, you get the vendor's app in your colours, and you still run support and sales. After an agency build, you hire the people who run the app.
What Fitera's share pays for
- Development, hosting and support. We build the app, pay for its servers and services, ship updates and answer your members.
- An app built around your method. Dense Club was designed around Keegan Smith's Dense Method, with daily EMOM workouts, automatic PRs and a Force Score.
- No cash risk. No upfront fee and no monthly bill. If the app earns nothing, you pay us nothing.
- Growth work. Analytics and growth experiments, because we only earn when your app grows.
- Your accounts, your members. Stripe and the store accounts are in your name, and we run them for you.
- A clear exit. After the 12-month minimum term, either side can leave with 60 days' notice. Your members, subscriptions and content stay with you, and our share stops.
You pay for your own developer accounts, your content and any ads. The code stays with Fitera, and you can buy it out by agreement. How a partnership works covers each step.
If you have the capital and a team to run the app, a fixed-fee route will cost you less. If you would rather keep creating while someone else builds and runs it, apply for a partnership. It's a 2-minute form.
What an agency build costs: $50,000 to $110,000 for a first version
Agency price guides range from $10,000 to $600,000, because "a fitness app" can mean a timer or a platform. For a creator's subscription app, the useful range is an MVP: the smallest version members will pay for.
- All app types
- Most projects reviewed on Clutch cost $10,000 to $49,999, with an average of $90,780 and a typical timeline of about 11 months. A GoodFirms survey of 167 companies put a simple app at $24,830 to $59,150.
- Fitness MVP
- ScienceSoft: "from $50,000". Uptech: $50,000 to $70,000. Topflight: $70,000 to $110,000 in 12 to 16 weeks.
- Full product
- $250,000 and up at Uptech, $250,000 to $450,000 at Topflight, up to $600,000 at ScienceSoft.
- Upkeep
- About 25% of the build cost a year (GoodFirms). Topflight quotes $2,000 to $6,000 a month.
Agency figures are the agencies' own marketing, except Clutch and GoodFirms. Checked 14 Sep 2026.
The price moves with scope. The big drivers are the number of platforms (iPhone, Android, web), video hosting and streaming, subscriptions and payments, a members' chat or community, and wearable or health data. Custom training logic, like auto-progression or a score, adds more.
Appvales, the company behind Fitera, also builds apps for a fee. We don't publish a price list, because scope drives the number.
Costs people forget
- Store accounts and paperwork. Apple charges $99 a year and Google Play $25 once. Several platforms also need a registered business and a D-U-N-S number (a free company ID from Dun & Bradstreet) before they publish under your name.
- Payment fees beyond the headline. Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% for currency conversion. Apple's rate rises from 15% to 30% once you pass $1 million a year.
- Per-member pricing. Some platforms charge per client or subscriber on top of the plan: $2 per client above 20 on FitBudd Super Pro, $0.99 per subscriber on Uscreen App Essentials.
- Content. Filming a program library costs money and weeks, on every route.
- Support and marketing time. Members email about logins, refunds and bugs. Someone answers, and someone keeps posting.
- Leaving later. A cancelled Trainerize branded app "will be deactivated", and Playbook deletes your channel 12 months after you leave. Leaving a builder means rebuilding the app, unless it lets you download the code (FlutterFlow's paid plans do).
- Leaving Fitera. Your members and subscriptions go with you. The app's code stays with us unless you buy it out.
“You raised prices and put me out of the app business. A long standing client… and it cost me $4000.”
Questions creators ask
Can I make a fitness app for free?
No: an app in the stores needs Apple's $99 a year and Google Play's $25. Builders that publish to the stores start at $29.25 a month (FlutterFlow Basic, billed yearly). A revenue-share partner charges nothing up front, but the store accounts are still yours to pay.
How much does it cost to run a fitness app each month?
$29 to $699 on a builder, and $99 to $499 or more on a coaching platform. After an agency build, budget about 25% of the build cost a year, or $1,042 to $2,292 a month for a $50,000 to $110,000 app. Payment fees come on top.
How much does Fitera cost?
$0 up front and no monthly fee. Fitera keeps 30% to 50% of net revenue, the money left after payment fees, and the split is fixed in the contract before work starts. We pay for development, hosting and support; you pay for your developer accounts, content and any ads.
Is Trainerize or Kajabi cheaper than your own app?
In cash, yes, for most creators: Trainerize Studio plans start at $275 a month. Kajabi's branded app comes with the $499 Pro plan or costs $199 a month on top of a lower plan, and you get the vendor's app in your colours, and support and sales stay with you. See Trainerize alternatives and the Kajabi branded app compared.
Do I pay Apple 30%?
Usually 15%: Apple's Small Business Program charges 15% to developers under $1 million a year. Above that the standard rate is 30%, and 15% on a subscription after its first year. Web checkout avoids the store fee: Stripe takes 3.6% + 30¢ on a subscription.
Sources and method
We checked every price and fee on the vendor's own site on 14 September 2026. We did not use one vendor's comparison pages about another. The ranges are the published plans that include your own app, as listed in our guide to the four routes.
The scenarios and the calculator use one model, and the calculator marks the route with the highest 12-month result at the middle of its range. Net revenue is members times price, minus the payment fee. Each route's monthly cost comes off net revenue, its cash before launch comes off the first year, and figures are rounded to the dollar.
- Fees: Stripe, Apple Small Business Program, Apple subscriptions, Google Play service fees.
- Platforms: Passion.io, FlutterFlow, Trainerize, Kahunas, FitBudd, Kajabi, Uscreen, Playbook, Foundry.
- Agency costs: Clutch, GoodFirms (around 2022), ScienceSoft, Uptech, Topflight. Store accounts: Apple Developer Program, Google Play registration. Fitera's terms come from our contracts.
